Knitting Story
My knitting history began roughly in 1998 when I was aching for a hobby. AC Moore was the closest arts & crafts store, so I took a trip to see what I could find.
I walked pretty aimlessly up and down the isles until I came to the yarn isles ... and then the knitting needles. There were dozens of learn-to-knit books, even more yarn and all types of needles, hooks and notions. I picked up the first book I saw ($12) and then went to the needles. A lady who looked rather knowledgeable was steadily choosing her yarns like she had probably done many times before, so I walked up to her and ask for help! She was very nice and eager to help. With her advice, I had a learn-to-knit book, yarn, needles (and crochet hooks) for about $13 and some change. (Unlike the book that chose, which was $12 by itself.)
She recommended that I learn to both knit and crochet, and then decide which I like better. Once at home, I started the knitting instructions first. Unfortunately, I quickly became frustrated and opened the hooks. To make a very long story short, I found it easier to learn to crochet from a book. But I was determined to learn knitting. Just on a random thought, I asked a co-worker if she knew how to knit. Surprise! She did. I showed her my book and explained how I didn't understand what the diagram was telling me to do. She took one look at the book and humorously tossed it aside saying, "Ok, here's what you do."
She tought me knit and purl, and the internet & books taught me the rest. And oddly enough, considering my start, I much prefer to knit than crochet.
